“Did you hear the news…?”
“Which one? I can hardly keep track of everything that’s been going on…”
“The one about Tatooine?”
“Oh right, the one about Mos Oola? Still can’t believe that the Empire took it over.”
“Right, well they said that the officer responsible for its fall is being transported here now!”
“Really? He’s being treated? After all that son of a bitch has done?”
“Apparently. I hope I become his nurse though…”
“Why’s that?”
“…because then I can kill the bastard with my own two hands…”
Lee opened his eyes and gasped, his body wracked with coughs as he struggled out of unconsciousness. With one hand he holds his throat as he continued to cough, his vision blurred from under-use. As vision was once again granted to him, it became clear to him that he wasn’t where he was supposed to be. Another check of his surroundings soon made him realize he was attached to a silken white bed, a comfortable one by any standard, though the unsightly view of wires attached everywhere on his body would soon dispel that theory. Lee would slowly remove the wires from his body as he stood up, dressed in a simple white suit with a red cross plastered across his back. “Patient garb…” He muttered, frowning weakly as he attempted to walk about. Immediately after taking his first step, he collapsed to his knees, unwilling to follow his will. “Damn it, Lee, get up…” He grunted, slowly standing up and continuing to walk. To his left, he saw a large window overlooking a huge city. Upon closer inspection, he widened his eyes as he realized where he was, the last place he wished he could be.
“Coruscant…” He growled, slamming a fist against the glass. “…damned Coruscant…”
His ears pricked up at the sound of a door opening behind him. Lee turned around quickly to see a familiar woman enter the room, her grey hair curled up in a bun. He frowned with confusion as he realized who she was, standing up straight and at attention. “General Garza, sir.” He said smartly.
There was something about the woman that made her unnerving to Lee. Perhaps it was the way she walked, her every movement copied straight from the manual. Or perhaps it was the way she spoke, a monotonous voice that made you think like she was a droid. No, worse, than a droid. A droid can have a personality.
Or perhaps it was her eyes, cold and calculating. And to think she’s one of the Republic’s greatest and infamous generals.
Garza’s eyes glanced at the man’s bed, squinting slightly with disapproval as the bed hadn’t been made. It wasn’t really Lee’s fault, coming out of unconsciousness, but that wasn’t the point.
“I see you’re finally awake.” She droned, her eyes staring at him as if he was guilty of something.
“Yes, ma’am.” Lee replied, his eyes staring at the wall opposite of him. “Though I don’t know how I got here, ma’am.”
Garza nodded slowly, standing right next to Lee as she looked out at the view of Coruscant. “Mos Oola was attack by an invasion force of the Empire, nearly everyone was killed.
Lee widened his eyes, breaking off from protocol almost immediately. “You’re joking.”
The woman glanced at Lee with almost a look of pity. Almost. “Almost 50% of the civilian population was killed. The whole company that was stationed under your command was wiped out.”
Lee turned his gaze to the floor, shaking heavily. “What…why…how could this…” He began before feeling a sense of nausea envelop him. It wasn’t long until he fell to the ground, bile splattering the floor as he lost his senses. Yet Garza stood where she was, looking at the floor with mild disgust. “Pull yourself together, Sergeant. None of this is your fault. The Senate was just too blind and ignorant of Mos Oola’s situation to even consider sending more resources.”
Lee wiped his mouth and panted, sweat beading down his skin. “The Senate…?” He gasped.
“Correct. It’s all over the news, Sergeant. You’re being criticized by all of the Republic. The Senate has revoked your medals and has decided to make you lose your command as well.”
Lee shook his head slightly. “This is ridiculous…” He said before widening his eyes, frantically looking up at Garza. “What of the others? My brothers, Calpyphus, my wife and daughter?!”
“Your brothers were slain, all of them. As for your father, he’s fallen off the grid. We can’t even get a damn trace of him. We suspect he’s fled to the Empire’s domain, but again, we have no information. Your wife and daughter are fine. They came and watched over you plenty of times, sometimes even against my will.” Garza said before shaking her head. “Your failure is unacceptable, Sergeant.”
Lee slowly turned his gaze up towards Garza, incredulous. She’s hiding something, he thought. “Ma’am, I had requested many times to the Senate to provide more support! With only a single co-”
“You had completed much harder assignments with fewer resources, Sergeant. I understand your distress, but the Senate doesn’t.” Garza cut in, walking away from the window. She casually walked back to the door, her back in a perfect upright position.
Lee gazed down at his hands, smooth and soft, even after the troubles and trials he had suffered through his life. He remained silent, opening and closing his hands.
“The Senate has called for your immediate removal from the Republic military forces. I for one am against that. Your performance speaks for itself, and I’d hate to lose such a tremendous asset as you.” She droned, her eyes at Lee, without a hint of life or light within them.
Ha, an asset. So she doesn’t even consider me a person…
“Yes, ma’am.” He replied, finally standing up, albeit shakily. Slowly making his way to the window, he placed a hand on the glass window, staring out at the vast infrastructure that was Coruscant. “So what will happen to me?”
“Well, for starters, you’ll have to change your name. We’ll keep your first, but you’ll now be Lee Kuang, in honor of your stepfather. As for what you will do, I’ve managed to pull a few contacts to get you into a spot for our best special operations unit. Have you ever heard of Legion?” Garza replied, checking each and every one of her medals meticulously.
“Legion? The first special forces unit? I thought they were wiped out during the Sacking of Coruscant?” Lee replied, confused.
“That’s correct, to a degree. On paper, it was wiped out. In reality, the unit still exists, away from the eyes of the Senate.” Garza said, taking out a datapad and placing it on a nearby table. “Your stepfather, Jonnie, used to be the C.O. but after his death, they were leaderless, until now. That datapad contains the roster and mission logs. Study them and read them, you’ll need to get to know your unit as soon as you can.” She said before walking out. “Oh, and I’ve arranged for your wife and your daughter to meet you now that you’re awake. They should be here any minute.” And with that, she left, never to be seen in person again by Lee.
Lee made his way over to the datapad, picking it up and examining it. Upon closer inspection, he saw that there were few in the roster, a big red “Recruits needed!” sign blaring across the screen. Each of the members were unique to his eyes, a ragtag team of the most random, yet combat capable people that he’s ever read and seen. A Sith Pureblood, which he personally was concerned about, was apparently his second-in-command. A Mirialan monk, the dossier stating that the man couldn’t speak, yet was able to communicate through his mind. A blue-haired explosives specialist, a manic grin on her face as she hugged onto a deadly device, apparently formerly incarcerated. A dark-skinned Zabrakian stim dealer, known for never being seen without high on his stims. The list went on, and Lee was concerned. How the hell could he lead such a band of misfits? Understandably he knew they were at least somewhat capable, otherwise Garza wouldn’t have kept them around.
Lee shook his head and sighed lightly. It seems he wouldn’t be getting a break anytime soon. He jumped slightly as he heard the word “Daddy!”, turning around to find his wife and daughter at the door, his daughter running straight at him.
“Hey Princess! How are you?” He asked happily as he placed the datapad down and picked up his daughter, carrying over to his wife. As the family began to celebrate his eventual recovery, the datapad began to glow, starting to play a recorded interview of the members of Legion. As the video went on, a similar occurrence happened with each one. At exactly the same time at one point, they all said the same exact words.
We are Balance.
We are Order.
We are Legion.
